This time last year I had just finished up some amazing art fairs in Los Angeles and Mexico City, and this year I'm watching from afar - primarily via Instagram and email.
While doing so, it has become quite clear that social media has (unsurprisingly) taken note of the changes in my personal life, with the algorithms working overtime to serve me exclusively baby and new mom content. (See below… even Sotheby’s knows I might be interested in The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.)
This noise has been particularly annoying as Instagram has always been such a great place to discover art when travelling to see it in person isn’t on the table. So I’ve decided to over-index on looking at art via Instagram this month, with fingers crossed that by doing so I’ll be able to combat the constant influx of baby content.
🌊 Deep Dive: (Re) Discovering Art on Social Media
While on my journey to reinvigorate my scrolling, it occurred to me that newsletter readers may be keen on some fresh art in their feeds as well, and there happens to be an art-related account for everyone. However, if deleting social media is a 2024 resolution for you, this post may not be for you, but if that doesn’t stick and you are keen to freshen up your feed, read on…
So you like painting?
There’s an account for all flavors - from geographically focused @newamericanpaintings to a gallery focused on the medium @painterspaintingpaintings to genre-specific @landscape_painting_now and of course, @peggy, a marketplace focused on the medium.
You want to see art when you travel?
@thecollectorslist shares interesting global exhibitions while @seesawmap charts what’s happening in art capitals - NYC, London, Paris, and Berlin.
Interested in seeing the world through an artist’s eye?
I love following @hilary_pecis who shows her own work and glimpses into her impressive studio mates as well. @another_ruby’s account is also fun.
Curious about some unsexy market madness?
The @boughtinatauction account highlights artworks that don't make auction headlines while @arthandlermag brings some humor to the less glamorous, utilitarian side of selling art.
Want to see how to live with contemporary art?
@creativeartpartners’ account features drool-worthy real estate complimented by incredible art, while art advisor @levinartgroup1’s account provides a glimpse into works he places with clients, helps people live with beautiful work while living in a work of art by Frank Lloyd Wright (and enjoying some other collectibles like watches and whisky).
Both @petescantland and @theicygays share what they are eyeing and the stunning ways they are living (or working) with their finds… Or, alterntively, follow @greatartinuglyrooms for a less aesthetically pleasing take.
Keen to learn a bit more about (contemporary) art history?
A great museum like the @whitneymuseum will always be informative and content-rich, while someone like @lisacooleynyc provides an insider perspective of what’s happening in art today, with informative captions.
’s newsletter Art Forcast is always chock-full of new discoveries, the complimentary Instagram account, @artforecast, is no different.Shoutout to @whos____who - the recently shuttered account that creates side by sides of artists with similar aesthetics.
Looking for a little more?
Check out some gallery and artist accounts and follow those you like. Museums are great too, but if there are a few galleries where you like the programming, you’ll discover some hidden gems.
See an artwork you love or anything you love for that matter? Save it and cross your fingers for an algorithm that serves similar works — hopefully some familiar and some totally new, and please, let me know what you find!
